Library Builder – Team Leader

Mission Hill School, Roxbury, Ma.

One of the oldest Pilot Schools in Boston; K-8

The curriculum is themes and experience based. It does not have a scope and sequence that matches the Massachusetts Curriculum Frameworks. Many of its graduates go on to prestigious high schools

  • Key to re-building library was reviving defunct catalog and exporting book data to inexpensive web based catalog.
  • Created work flow for book processing – acquisition/donation to shelf.
  • Emphasized Access and Currency– lowering shelf heights, exhaustive weeding, making webpage to easily reach catalog and Tagging books in catalog.
  • Prioritized books for processing according to immediate curriculum needs and collection strengths.
  • All of this was done using minimal funds, 1 library assistant and volunteers. Library

High School Library Accreditation Consultant

New Mission High School, Roxbury, MA

This pilot school did not have a library, but needed one to achieve NEASC accreditation. They recruited me to provide a map to success. In spite of many limiting factors - including structural I was able to draw up the map. The information was best presented in a visual format and so was delivered via a PDF. Click here to see it.

School Library Director and Builder

Community Christian Academy, Lowell, MA.

A small urban religious school with non-discriminatory policies.

-          Built the first collection and library team from nothing for an under-funded school.

-          All materials, labor, skilled and unskilled and most technology donated.

-          In keeping with the idea of leveraging technology on the cheap and increasing communication between a physically separated team, created a blog and a website

-          http://ccalibrary.blogspot.com   (frozen)

-          www.christianschoollibrary.info  (frozen)

-          This was done as a research project rather than as a school librarian. There was nothing to be found in the professional literature on how to create a library from nothing – so an objective in this project was to contribute at least one piece of data to the literature.

Collection Consultant

Greater Lowell Technical High School, Tyngsboro, MA.

-          Hired to examine non-print collection of 10,000 items.

-          Advised on current best practices in weeding and copyright.

Provided a roadmap for the future direction of the collection in light of the unique teaching needs of a career and technical high school
